Step 4: Promoting a Website
There are some basic settings you want to check before you promote your website. First, click on Settings -> Reading and make sure the box next to “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” is NOT checked. If left checked, you are requesting that sites such as Google and Bing do NOT list your website on their search results. Click “Save Changes”.
Perhaps the next most important setting to check is your Permalinks. These are found in Settings -> Permalinks. The permalink setting determines how the URLs for your posts and pages are generated by WordPress. By default, the setting generates links that are not easily remembered by people or easily indexed by search engines. You want to change this setting to something that makes “prettier” links. Select the circle next to “Post name” and save your changes.
Changing those two settings will allow search engines such as Google to find your site. However, to further promote your website, there are a couple of other things you can do:
- Install a plugin for SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. There are many options; click on Plugins -> Add New and enter “SEO” in the search box. After installing the plugin of your choice, follow the instructions for that particular plugin on how to optimize your site.
- Integrate Social Media into your website. You can further promote your website by also setting up accounts on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, etc. Again, there are plugins for WordPress that allow you to link your social media accounts to your website. Under Plugins -> Add New, search for “social media” and you will see a wide variety of options to install.
- Post often. Search engines typically offer higher rankings to sites with frequently updated content.
Now that you know how easy and fun creating your own website can be, go out and create!
